Captain, Yusuf Kalmaz was born in Iskenderun, on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey, and has been working in the maritime sector for 30 years, having been drawn to the sea from a very early age. Yusuf completed his high school studies at the Iskenderun Maritime Vocational College and took his first steps in establishing a career in the yachting industry while working as Able Seaman aboard cargo ships based in the Mediterranean. After three years, and many thousands of sea miles, Yusuf found a position aboard a Bodrum-based charter yacht, the ketch-rigged gulet, "MELODI", where he initially served as lead deckhand, gaining the experience necessary to ensure him a captain's position on the same yacht in 1995. Following five busy summer seaons with the yacht, MELODI, Yusuf, who was by now a licenced Yachtmaster , was offered a four-year captain's position on the French- flagged, "LE PARADISO", another sailing yacht. His next post was aboard the 26 metre motor-sailing yacht, 'LADY Q", which was initially a private yacht, but was later offered for charter, giving Yusuf a chance to build on his English language skills. At the helm of "LADY Q", Captain Yusuf sailed extensively throughout the Aegean and the Eastern Mediterranean, When the yacht was sold, Captain Yusuf was delighted with the opportunity of joining the sailing yacht REGINA and has been with her for the past 3 years. During the winter season of 2013/2014, Captain Yusuf and his crew took REGINA across the Atlantic Ocean and into the Caribbean Sea, an opportunity that saw each of them gain invaluable experience. The yachts busy schedule took her to numerous destinations in the Caribbean and along the South American coastline, returning to the Mediterranean four months later.
Yusuf has gained a great deal of experience over the many years of his employment in the yacht charter business. His broad knowledge of the local cruising areas, together with his pleasant personality make him very popular with his guests. His English is very good and he is more than happy to show guests around the Turkish and Greek coasts historical sites or partner them in a game of backgammon. During the wintertime, Yusuf, who is married with two children, loves to spend time traveling.
Yusuf leads an excellent crew of seven, all of whom are non-smokers.
Chef, Muharrem Kaya, started working in kitchens at the age of 15. In his native Mengen, a town within the Bolu district of Turkey, it is quite the custom for young men to learn the culinary arts and in fact, Bolu is distinguished as being the source of great culinary talent it is where Turkeys best chefs are educated. Muharrem developed his appreciation of the art even further and then took his knowledge overseas, gaining additional experience in Passenger Ships and Pleasure Crafts. As his greatest passion was always the sea, the 45-year-old swapped large commercial kitchens for the compact one-chef galleys of yachts 10 years ago and has never looked back. He is experienced in the preparation of Turkish, Italian and French cuisine and is especially fond of creating delicious skillet dishes. He lists as his hobbies watching films and documentaries, swimming and reading books. He is non-smoker, speaks good English, is married and has a son. In 2013, Muharrem sailed with REGINA to the Caribbean and down the coast of South America.
Host, Emir istekli has extensive experience as a waiter, having begun his career at a restaurant in Istanbul back in 2006, and from there, moving overseas to work onboard the Royal Caribbean Lines cruise ships between 2007 and 2009.
Returning to the Mediterranean, he commenced working as a crew member aboard the private motor yacht, M/Y DREAM ON. He he gained valuable experience in the role of host and soon hopped off this motor yacht and onto the sailing yacht, ROSINANTE, a popular charter vessel which was headed for Croatia at the time. He returned to his homeland for the summer of 2011, but by the beginning of 2012 Emir was yet again bound for European destinations, this time with a position aboard the charter yacht, JAX, out of Ibiza.
Emirs friendly, professional style of service has been acquired during the course of eight years, during which he has worked exclusively in the field of hospitality. He takes pride in his ability to recognise his guests requirements and deliver a prompt service with the utmost care.
Emir has an outgoing personality and is fluent in English. His French and Spanish language skills are both at the beginner/intermediate level. Of his many talents, his lists mixing cocktails as among the best, and at the end of 2013, his skills were greatly enhanced while serving groups of international guests during the time that REGINA was in the Caribbean and cruising the coast of South America.
Hostess, Damla Ejder
Damla was born in 1994 in Kocaeli. She curently attends the Kocaeli University and is studying Maritime Transport and Administration part time. She commenced her training in the maritime studies while still in high school by spending her summers working aboard a variety of private motor yachts and sailing yachts, gaining experience as a hostess. Damla has continued with this line of work and aboard REGINA is able to demionstrate her excellent housekeeping skills, keeping guest cabins looking immaculate at all times
Damla is a capable lady with the ability to be as energetic and flexible as her role requires, all the while maintaining a quiet and respectful disposition.
Senior Deckhand, Kenan Yılmaz
Kenan is 29 years old and single. He has been working on board yachts in the position of deckhand for more than 10 years, the past three of which have been spent on board REGINA as deck hand. He is quick and efficient and always keen to assist our guests with water sports equipment. With his love of sailing, he is readily able to assist all those who wish to learn the sport. His greatest pleasure is derived from introducing his guests to the joy of sailing. Kenan was one of the crew members who sailed across the Atlantic Ocean with REGINA during the 2013 winter season, and served on board during her time in South America.
Kenan is English-speaking and enjoys sporting pursuits such as snorkelling and swimming, along with travelling.
Senior Deckhand, Batuhan Ycelen
Batuhan is 20 years of age and comes from Izmir. He is a student in Kocaeli Universitys Maritime Transport department. Prior to commencing his career on charter yachts, Batuhan worked as a Watersports Co-ordinator at a local 5-star hotel. Here he learned all aspects of tender operation and became an ace at operating a tender with a Banana or Ringo in tow. He is also an excellent Jet Ski and Sonar operator, so will always be on hand to assist our guests with all of their water-based leisure activities.
Commencing during his last years in highschool, Batuhans enthusiasm for his chosen career cast him into positions such as steward, deckhand and marine engineers assistant.
He lists as his interests scuba diving, horse riding, snow boarding, basketball and hand ball.
Deckhand, mit Yıldırım
mit is 22 years of age and comes from Ankara, Turkey's capital city. He was 13 years old when his family moved to Bodrum, where he finished high school at the local Maritime Vocational College. He is gradually picking up the English language through each summer he works aboard REGINA and lists among his interests football, music and playing the traditional Turkish stringed instrument, the saz.
Engineer, Tarik Ergunes
Tarik is from Milas, near Bodrum and is a graduate of Milas Technical High School. At the age of 17, he commenced working as a deckhand and trainee engineer aboard a motor yacht and has since worked on a number of private yachts and charter gulets.
Tarik has become a skilled electrician and as such, is a valuable member of the team who attnded to the maintenance of all electrical and electronic systems aboard REGINA during her recent visit to South America. Tarik is learning to speak English, enjoys reading and listening to music and admits that his real passion is behind the wheel: driving cars and tenders!
Deckhand/Trainee, Mustafa Yaşar
Mustafa was born in 1998 in Milas. He completed a captaincy course at his local Hospitality and Tourism Trade College and joins REGINA or his first-ever position on the sea. The youngest member of the team, Mustafa has a thirst for knowledge that couples with his love of the sea, swimming and all watersports. He is an easy-going character and gets along well with everyone. He is looking forward to building on his English language skills.
